Climate Grief, Climate Action

On October 8th, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of scientists from around the world, issued a sweeping report with a clear message. We need to limit warming to a 1.5 degrees Celsius increase above preindustrial levels to avoid catastrophic impacts such as widespread drought, famine and tropical storms even worse than those we are seeing break records right now. And it will require a massive transformation of the global energy system to get there.

Many of us are grieving the destruction planet we love, and the ravaging of vulnerable populations that is already underway. We must make room for this grief. But we must also trust in our power to act with courage. We can’t respond to this report with hopelessness. The IPCC report also provides the clearest blueprint we’ve had for the economic transformation we need. And it makes clear the culprits - the fossil fuel industry and spineless politicians under their sway who refuse to act to protect our futures. Our work is cut out for us.

And in all of this, Yale University--with its investments in fossil fuel companies and hedge funds that are exploiting Puerto Rico’s climate disaster--is complicit.

Come together with Fossil Free Yale this Thursday evening to process climate grief and move towards bold climate action.
